Terms of use
Version 2026-11-05. By signing up, logging in or making a link, you agree to these terms.
1. What this is
link.davidxie.dev is a small, private, invite-only link shortener run by David Xie as an individual ("I", "me"). It's provided for free, as a personal project, to people I've invited. "You" means anyone with an account.
2. Your account
- Keep your password secret. You're responsible for everything done with your account.
- Tell me straight away if you think someone else has access to your account.
- Don't share your account or give out invite codes to people you don't trust.
3. Your links are your responsibility
You are solely and fully responsible, and legally liable, for every short link you make, for where it leads, for where you share it, and for what happens as a result. I don't check, approve or monitor links, and I'm not responsible for them or for the sites they lead to.
4. What you can't link to or do
- Anything illegal where you are or in the UK, or anything that helps someone break the law.
- Child sexual abuse material of any kind. This is reported to the police and the Internet Watch Foundation immediately, along with everything I know about the account.
- Intimate images of anyone shared without their consent, or content that harasses, threatens, bullies or doxxes anyone.
- Content that promotes terrorism or violence, or incites hatred.
- Malware, phishing pages, scams, or anything made to deceive people or steal their information, including hiding where a link really goes to trick people.
- Anything that infringes someone else's copyright, trademarks or other rights.
- Spam, or making links in bulk.
- Trying to break, overload, probe or get around the service's security or limits, or access other people's accounts or links.
5. You cover any trouble your links cause
You agree to indemnify me and hold me harmless: if anyone makes a claim, complaint, demand or legal action against me because of a link you made or shared, or because you broke these terms or the law, you'll cover all of the resulting losses, damages, fines, costs and legal fees. You'll also help me deal with it if I ask.
6. What I can do
- Change or remove any link, or suspend or delete any account, at any time, for any reason or none, without warning.
- Look at links that are reported to me or that I think break these terms.
- Give information about your account and links to the police, courts or other authorities when the law requires it, or when I believe it's needed to deal with illegal content or protect someone.
- Change, pause or shut down the service at any time.
7. What's stored about you
Your username, a scrambled (hashed) copy of your password, your links and when they were made, and the IP address used when you signed up, accepted these terms, and made each link. The IP addresses are there so abuse can be traced to whoever did it. They're deleted along with your account. Nothing is recorded about the people who open your links.
8. Reporting a link
If a link here leads somewhere illegal, harmful or that infringes your rights, email david.xie@student.manchester.ac.uk with the link. I'll review reports and remove anything that breaks these terms as quickly as I reasonably can.
9. No promises
The service is provided free, "as is" and "as available", with no warranty of any kind. Links may stop working, or the service may go down or lose data, at any time.
10. Limits on my liability
As far as the law allows, I'm not liable for any loss or damage of any kind arising from your use of the service, from other people's links or the sites they lead to, or from the service being unavailable or losing data. Nothing in these terms limits liability that can't legally be limited, like for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
11. Changes and ending
I may change these terms. If the change matters, you'll be asked to accept the new version before making links again. You can stop using the service at any time; ask me and I'll delete your account and links. If your account is deleted, sections 3, 5, 9 and 10 still apply to the links you made.
12. Law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and any dispute goes to the courts of England and Wales.
